Genesis is Old
Debates continue about the exact period in which the book of Genesis was written. But current research based on the Dead Sea Scrolls suggests that Genesis was written anywhere from 1500 to 1200 years before the birth of Jesus Christ. This means that the book of Genesis is well over 3000 years old.
Modern Science is Much Newer
According to many historians, the scientific revolution started around 1543 when the scientist Copernicus published the book On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres about the sun being the center of the universe instead of the earth. Since then, scientific discoveries have gradually accelerated. Science can now explain in a fairly reliable way the history of our earth and universe.
The Old Describes the New
What is not widely known yet is that the descriptions in the first chapter of Genesis can be shown to be in increasing harmony with how science now describes the history of our earth and universe. A major goal of this website is to explain this harmony between Genesis 1 and science in a way that is understandable to as many people as possible.
The Logic is Profound
Putting this evidence together, the logic is easy (and very profound).
- In the last 600 years science has found truths about the history of our earth and universe that no human had known before this time.
- Genesis was written over 3000 years ago, thousands of years before science made these discoveries about our earth and universe.
- With an appropriate understanding of the Hebrew word yom, the point of view given in Genesis 1:2, and an understanding of when metaphor is used in Genesis 1, then the objective truths of science are increasingly in harmony with the Genesis accounts.
- The conclusion is straightforward – the description in Genesis chapter 1 (that was written over 3000 years ago) must be from the Creator of the universe. Who else but the Creator would have been able to correctly describe the sequence of events as now described by science that happened billions of years ago?
Furthermore, the Bible is the only ancient text where the Creator has chosen to reveal a history of our earth and universe that harmonizes so well with science. So, this gives a unique authority to the Bible and its stories and teachings.
