Other Supportive Resources

General Resources

  1. Reasons to Believe – Our favorite resource for old earth creationism. This was founded by Dr. Hugh Ross in the 1980s as an outreach primarily to the scientific community. They have several other scholars-in-residence and numerous in-depth books and videos covering how science harmonizes well with the Bible.
  2. Old Earth Ministries – Numerous resources covering the old earth creationist perspective, including testimonies from former believers in young earth creationism, book reviews, free home school curricula, articles, and a list of links to other resources.
  3. Naturalis Historia – Series of up-to-date blogs by a Christian professor of biology at the University of Akron. Many articles address difficulties with the young earth creationist approach.
  4. Evidence for God from Science – Good discussion forum for many Christian topics, including Old Earth Creationism.
  5. Big Bible YouTube Channel – This is our YouTube channel, but there is not much there yet – hopefully we will be able to populate this with more videos soon.

Intelligent Design Resources

Intelligent Design addresses the questions of how to interpret nature from a scientific perspective rather than a religious perspective. It is not against religious interpretations, but it posits that purely from scientific, rational, and logical philosophical principles that there must be a great intelligence that is behind the creation of the universe and the creation of life. In other words, the naturalistic, materialistic philosophy that only nature exists is inconsistent using standard scientific and philosophical reasoning. The following websites are good resources that explain and defend this approach.

  1. Intelligent Design – This site has many resources examining the idea of an intelligent designer of the universe. The main arguments are from a scientific and philosophical viewpoint and not from a Biblical viewpoint per se. The Discovery Institute that produces this website has many leaders who are supportive of the Judeo-Christian worldview in their personal lives, however.
  2. Discovery Institute – Discovery Institute is a non-profit, non-partisan organization focused on research, education, action, and cultural renewal. The Institute sponsors research in the sciences, humanities, and public policy. It organizes conferences, seminars, and educational programs for both young people and adults. It produces and disseminates books, articles, reports, and a wide array of multimedia content designed to inform the public.
  3.  Stephen Meyer’s YouTube Channel – Dr. Stephen Meyer is the director of the Discovery Institute’s Center for Science and Culture and a founder of the intelligent design movement. His videos and books provide articulate defenses of the why the universe and life point to an intelligent designer.
  4. Discovery Science – Videos that explore intelligent design from many perspectives and include many excellent visualizations of scientific processes.

Resources Focused on Geology and the Bible

  1. GeoChristian – Series of up-to-date blogs by a teacher in the area of earth sciences and geology. The primary objective of the website is to increase science literacy in the Evangelical Christian community.
  2. Age of Rocks – Another set of up-to-date blogs by a Christian Ph.D. candidate in geoscience who seeks to especially address the fallacies that are put forth by young earth creationists in the area of the geosciences.
  3. Solid Rock Lectures – Website from a group of Ph.D. speakers whose “desire is to remove obstacles to faith, and renew Christians’ ability to marvel and delight in the discoveries God is revealing in nature”. They provide lectures to various groups from an old earth perspective.
  4. The Stones Cry Out – Written by a Christian geophysicist who realized that old earth creationism was a much better match for the science of geophysics than was young earth creationism. He then found new perspectives on the Bible which were in actual harmony with the science. His website explains many of his findings along these lines.

Big History Resources

The Big History project is a primary inspiration for our approach. We find ourselves consistent with the general approach of the Big History project. The missing piece in our opinion is the idea of how the Bible can support and give insight into the Big History approach. The Bible also describes the underlying spiritual truths behind the creation, which are not usually covered in courses similar to Big History. The Big History project covers the Bible as part of their origin stories, but we take the Bible to be exceptional because we believe it was inspired by the great Creator of the universe and all that is in it, including us as humans. However, the Bible is very sparse in most of the early descriptions of the universe and precursors to mankind. Where the Bible does make statements, though, we believe these can offer great insights into the actual Big History of mankind and the universe. Below are some selected resources from the Big History project that are especially relevant to the Big Bible project.

  1. Big History lecture on How to Decide What to Believe – Dr. Bob Bain, an associate professor of educational studies at the University of Michigan, covers criteria about how to assess claims – intuition, authority, logic, and evidence. Although it is counter-cultural to many of the current narratives in our society, we find that Old Earth Creationism does indeed stand up to these claims in a positive way – which is of course the purpose of this website.
  2. Crash Course World Mythology Series – This is not from Big History but it is a good overview of how our current culture approaches creation stories, especially from an academic perspective. Although the word “myth” is often used to denote a story that is untrue, this series uses only the criteria of significance and staying power to decide which myths to describe and leaves truthfulness up to the viewer. This allows these stories to be studied from other perspectives such as psychology, sociology, and literature. It is good to understand this common perspective of lumping origin stories with all mythologies so that we can better understand how many people would be surprised by our claims of the Bible’s exceptionalism.
  3. Public website for the Big History project – An overview of what the Big History project is all about. The official website uses the nomenclature of OER for “Open Educational Resource”, which refers to teaching and learning materials that “are available online, for anyone to use, free of cost.”
  4. The OER YouTube channel – Numerous Big History videos and playlists covering the different aspects about the history of our universe and the history of mankind.
  5. Course website for the Big History project – For logging into the courses of Big History

Overview Resources

  1. An Impartial Overview of the Creation Debate – Provides summaries of the views for Young Earth Creationism and of variations of the Old Earth Creationism Views, namely the Day Age View (the view that Big Bible subscribes to), the Intermittent Day View, the Literary Framework View, the Gap View, and the Analogical Day View.
  2. Let’s Talk Creation – A YouTube channel with Paul and Todd leading the conversations of thoughtful discussions mostly about Young Earth Creationism.  They do also have some discussions with Old Earth Creationists from time to time as well. This is an outreach of the Young Earth Creationist organization Biblical Creation Trust website.
